DG David’s June report

Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Partners

The beginning of May saw Christine and myself spending 5 nights at the Multiple District Convention and Council Meetings held in Swansea with our International President Lion Gudrun Yngvdottir being present for 3 of the those days, where she gave a number of very inspirational addresses.

The highlight of the weekend however was when our International President Lion Gudrun and her husband Jon and a few District Governors and our partners (including Christine and myself) went to visit the Lions Club of Ammanford up in the Welsh Valleys where mining used to be and is no more, and on their own admission they are a rundown town, with a lot of social deprivation and with no local employment as such. There we saw some excellent examples of service, they maintain all the planters at two local railway station, have set up a peace mural in one of the railway stations shelters where they have involved the local primary school children, they maintain gardens at a local sheltered housing accommodation development, they have a monthly litter pick and bring Father Christmas to visit the children on his sleigh at Christmas, to name but a few of the excellent service activities they perform. They don’t do much fundraising as the local people have no spare money but as a club they do provide Service, service and yet more service. They will be talking for a long, long time about the day our International President went up the valleys, paid them a visit and it is a visit Christine and I will never forget either.
I am able to advise all clubs that the initiative announced in April to help recruit new members by the end of April has now been extended to the end of June 2019. This initiative rewards clubs who add new members to their clubs during the months of April, May and June, this will involve a $35 service grant being paid in 2 instalments in 6 months’ time and then in 12 months’ time if the new members remain active within the their clubs. Details on how this grant is to paid will follow in due course. This is of course on top of the arrangement in our District where all new members who join before the 30th June 2019 have their $35 membership fees paid for by our District funds.

Many congratulations to all the members of Scarborough Lions Club (the oldest club in 105NE) on celebrating their Diamond Jubilee with a very well attended Charter Dinner during the month of May.

I hope that all your plans and preparations are going very well for the very many wide and varied Fund raising, Community Service and Social events I have heard that you are all arranging and that we are blessed with wonderful weather like we had last summer. One of the biggest events that takes place in North Yorkshire each year is the Great Yorkshire Bike Ride which goes from Wetherby to Filey and has done so for the last 35 years, it involves up to 2000 cyclists and 70 miles of cycling down dale and uphill. Although it is not directly a Lions Club event it does involve at least 8 Lions Clubs, plus Northallerton ex Lioness members who run the refreshment tent at the finish, from our joint new District helping out with marshalling, loading and unloading of bikes, manning refreshment points etc. The event has raised in those last 35 years almost 3 million pounds for health charities as well as raising funds for the local Lions Clubs who assist at the start, along the way and at the finish. A great opportunity for new members to get involved or even prospective new members and show them Lion’s Club service in action.

As this is the last time I will write to you as your District Governor Christine and I would like to thank all Cabinet Officers, District Officers, clubs, all members and their partners for all the kind support and hospitality where ever we have been over the last 12 months in fact over the last 3 years. We have seen and heard about some tremendous service that is being carried out in our District which you are all to be congratulated upon. I would like to thank all Cabinet and District Officers for all their support and to wish DGE Andrew and his team all the very best for the future as we move forward into District 105N.
