Another busy Weekend for Pontefract Lioness Club

As the Lions Fun and Sports Day for the Disabled was taking place this weekend we knew it was going to be busy but the torrential rain on Friday night was not planned for.  Lots of phone calls were received asking if the games were cancelled but in the true spirit of Lions we said no they will go on and with over 230 competitors registering it turned out to be another great day.  the rain held off though the wind was quite strong at times and a couple of Clubs came very close to losing their gazebo’s but thankfully no permanent damage was done.

Sunday was the Pontefract Grand Prix and the Lioness club had planned to hold a bottle stall in Friarwood Valley Gardens where there was going to be lots of entertainment for everyone to take part in.  Unfortunately this event had to be cancelled due to the rain.  This did however give us the opportunity to get together with our sponsoring Lions Club and go the the Prince of Wales Hospice to see if there was anything we could do to help them since they were flooded out on Friday night.  Thankfully local support had been fantastic and lots of physical help had been given to sweep out the water, move furniture and lift carpets etc but now they are in much need of funds to buy basics such as bedding and food for the patients.  Castleford & Pontefract District Lions made a few phone calls and we are pleased to say that they have secure £1000 of funding from the Lions District Disaster Fund and this will be with the Hospice tomorrow morning so they can start using it immediately and we are now waiting for them to come back to us to let us know how else we can help.

Another Busy Weekend

The Lionesses have another busy weekend ahead of us with:

Saturday 7th June – Tombola Stall

Outside St Giles Church in Pontefract Town Centre – we will be raising funds for local charities – there are lots of prizes to be won and you can call in the church for a coffee and home made cakes whilst you are there!

Sunday 8th June – 37th Certification Anniversary

Pontefract Lioness Club are proud to be celebrating 37 years of supporting our local community.  Lions and Lionesses from all over Yorkshire are coming along to support us as well as some of our friends from further south whom we are looking forward to seeing.

Pontefract Youth Market

Together with Castleford & Pontefract District Lions we are proud to be sponsors of the Pontefract Youth Market – a project set-up by Markets Manager Steve Mason in conjunction with Wakefield Skills College to allow students the opportunity to run their own stall and gain experience in all aspects of being a market trader
