For the third year running we are pleased to be hosting Pontefract’s Annual Lantern Festival. Lantern Making workshops are being run every Wednesday and Saturday throughout September and October and all materials are provided free of charge.
So why not come and join in the fun. Make a lantern and join us on the parade which leaves the Castle at 7:30pm on Saturday 18th October.
As the Lions Fun and Sports Day for the Disabled was taking place this weekend we knew it was going to be busy but the torrential rain on Friday night was not planned for. Lots of phone calls were received asking if the games were cancelled but in the true spirit of Lions we said no they will go on and with over 230 competitors registering it turned out to be another great day. the rain held off though the wind was quite strong at times and a couple of Clubs came very close to losing their gazebo’s but thankfully no permanent damage was done.
Sunday was the Pontefract Grand Prix and the Lioness club had planned to hold a bottle stall in Friarwood Valley Gardens where there was going to be lots of entertainment for everyone to take part in. Unfortunately this event had to be cancelled due to the rain. This did however give us the opportunity to get together with our sponsoring Lions Club and go the the Prince of Wales Hospice to see if there was anything we could do to help them since they were flooded out on Friday night. Thankfully local support had been fantastic and lots of physical help had been given to sweep out the water, move furniture and lift carpets etc but now they are in much need of funds to buy basics such as bedding and food for the patients. Castleford & Pontefract District Lions made a few phone calls and we are pleased to say that they have secure £1000 of funding from the Lions District Disaster Fund and this will be with the Hospice tomorrow morning so they can start using it immediately and we are now waiting for them to come back to us to let us know how else we can help.
Join in the Yorkshire Day Celebrations in Pontefract Town Centre where there is lots happening for all the family. We are holding our pick a box stall with a prize every time and our fellow Lions are holding a coin collection in aid of The Yorkshire Regiment so don’t forget to come along and support us.
The Lionesses have another busy weekend ahead of us with:
Saturday 7th June – Tombola Stall
Outside St Giles Church in Pontefract Town Centre – we will be raising funds for local charities – there are lots of prizes to be won and you can call in the church for a coffee and home made cakes whilst you are there!

Selby Lions ‘Great Selby Bike Ride’ took place on Sunday 11th May 2014 and thankfully the rain held off whilst our Lionesses were marshalling along the route. Adults and Children of all ages took part in this annual event which just seems to get bigger and better every year.
